webbit design notes

a unique system dedicated to simplicity of use

Wylie Webbit

A ‘webbit’ is the PdePages name for a small, simple and easily managed website. Webbit design is focused on ensuring a simple, quick-to-use platform for the small or home-business person who knows little about website building just wants and rapid and easy way to post new content about their business, projects or promotions online.

active-blog home page

The essence of this design is almost never would you buy last week’s newspaper. Everybody reads both on and offline to get up to date with the latest information. Online, this generally appears in blog posts or articles. A website owner needs to have an easy way to add information and pictures without calling in his web design or learning the complex background coding himself. He or she wants to focus on their business, not keeping up with technology.

one simple form

In order to add a new blog post or article, the website owner just fills in a simple online form. They add a title, a category (or two), the description of their product, service or information plus a featured image. That’s it – job done. It automatically appears properly listed and formatted throughout their website.

easy-peasy editing

Perhaps the greatest strength of online information is the speed at which it can be added, edited and updated. All articles and posts are kept securely on a private control panel for the website owner. They may be classified as a draft or published. If draft, they can be continually edited before they are published. Items previously published can also be edited and updated – all done through the simple form. This includes changing the title, category, content or featured image.

a very familiar editor

Click on the small images below to see the details of the posts & articles editor. It is of a very common design similar to that used by MS Word.

how it all works

1) All articles and posts are displayed as thumbnail pictures on the home page in descending date order, the newest one first. They may be selected by using the category buttons placed above. Clicking a category button displays only the thumbnails of articles in that category. Underneath there are pagination buttons if the number of articles cannot be shown in a single line. Clicking a pagination button display the next batch.

2) Passing the mouse over a thumbnail causes:

  1. The thumbnail to blur
  2. It highlights the title
  3. Displays the category to which the article belongs
  4. Makes the title clickable

3) Clicking causes the full article to be displayed.

New articles are automatically displayed in this manner just by the website editor filling in a simple form, choosing a featured image and selecting the appropriate categories. Formatting and publication are entirely automatic. It really couldn’t be more simple.

what about the page layout?

The layout of a website’s pages and content is where online design life gets very complicated. This system is specifically designed to hide and protect the small business webmaster from these technical trials and tribulations. But this means you will need skilled help to change or edit the more ‘permanent’ areas of your website. Included in your PdePages package is free maintenance time expressly included to cover this situation. Contact me for details.

what about the ‘permanent’ page content?

As with page layout, this can be complex. Added to this, extra pages affect the menu bar and, once again, you start to slide down the rabbit-hole required nerdiness. Fortunately, once your website is launched, this content will rarely change. That’s why it’s classed as fixed or permanent. Your address, phone, email and contact I formation will not change often. Neither will your terms or hours of business. Once again, if you need changes, you’re covered by the included package maintenance period.
